Live Performance#

Live DJ software provides decks, transport controls, cueing, looping, EQ, effects, and hardware control during a performance. It is designed for immediate decisions such as changing the next track, extending a section, responding to requests, or adjusting energy in the room.

Live software is appropriate when real-time flexibility matters. It is not the most efficient environment for detailed offline editing of a long, predetermined mix.

  • Cueing through headphones.

  • Effects, stems, video, recording, or streaming if those functions will be used.

  • Switching between decks and external inputs.

Verify Audio Routing#

Check every active signal path separately:

  • Main output to the intended speakers or venue mixer.

  • Microphones and external sources.

Backups That Fit a Beginner’s Budget#

A reliable setup needs two different forms of protection:

  • Data backup restores music files, playlists, cues, databases, and projects after loss or corruption.

  • Playback redundancy keeps audible music running when the main computer, software, or audio path fails.

One does not replace the other. An external drive may contain a perfect library backup but still be useless during an interruption if no compatible player is available.

Use a 3-2-1 Data Pattern#

For important music and project files, aim for:

  • Three copies of critical data.

  • Two different storage types or locations.

  • One copy kept separately from the main working system.

Software Freeze#

If audio continues playing, avoid treating the freeze as an immediate silence. Prepare the backup path while the current track is still audible. Switch only when necessary, then restart or troubleshoot the main system without audience pressure.

If the audio has already stopped, restore the backup channel first. Once music is playing, check whether the failure came from the application, audio interface, USB connection, or mixer input.

Audio Dropout#

A dropout can result from excessive system load, an unstable USB connection, an unsuitable buffer setting, or incorrect routing. Do not change several variables simultaneously during the performance.

After the backup is active:

  1. Check whether the controller or audio interface is still powered.

  2. Check the mixer input and channel state.

  3. Inspect the USB and audio connections.

  4. Confirm that the correct audio device remains selected.

  5. Restart only the failed component if a safe procedure is known.

Accidental Track Stop#

Keep a familiar emergency track ready on a spare deck or backup device. A track with a usable intro or loop can create enough time to recover without making the interruption more noticeable.

The emergency track should already be analyzed, locally available, and tested. It should not depend on a search, login, or network connection.

A successful export notification does not prove that the resulting file is ready for use. Verify:

  • The file opens on a second player or device.

  • The total duration is plausible.

  • The beginning and ending are complete.

  • Transitions and edited sections contain no silence or obvious artefacts.

  • The file is stored in at least two accessible locations.

  • The destination device has sufficient charge and the required adapter.

For critical recorded mixes, listening to the complete rendered file is safer than relying only on short spot checks.

A planned mix is only exportable if the necessary source material is available under the applicable service and licensing conditions. Streaming or preview integrations may restrict recording, export, offline playback, or transfer to external media.

A clear responsibility split improves reliability:
