There are a bunch of different stem separation software available today. From stand-alone apps to plugins that work with a DAW, and even free online solutions. The quality of the results differs drastically from brand to brand - and you'll want to make sure that you use something that sounds clean and free from artifacts.

Here are some of the most recommended pieces of stem separation on the market:

Gaudio Studio - Free#

Free, browser-based. Sounds great, and the interface is easy to use.

Voice.AI - Free#

This free stem separation tool lets you isolate elements of audio tracks, and separates stems out pretty effectively. It works with multiple file formats, including MP3 and WAV files. I found that this works better on vocals than instruments like electric guitar, but it still does the job well for for a free piece of software!

Virtual DJ - Real Time Stem Separation - Free to try#

For DJs, currently one of the best options for real-time stem separation is Virtual DJ. Some of the more advanced versions feature stem separation tools built into the mixer, letting you isolate drums, vocals, bass, and other instruments.

This lets you use the stem separation tools in real-time while you're mixing, without requiring any preparation.

This is pretty handy for making more unique mixes in the moment, but the results can be a little iffy.

Serato Sample 2.0 - $149#

This tool was released by DJ software giant Serato, and for $149 offers extremely high quality, and a few extra features and sampling capability.

FL Studio 21.2 - Starting at $99#

FL Studio is a popular DAW for music production, and in their 21.2 update, they added a built-in stem separation plugin. This comes with the base software and doesn't require an additional purchase.

Sure, the features are pretty limited, and it only gives you 4 different separation types - but it gets the job done, and if you already own FL Studio it's a nice free addition.

Other Stem Separation Software#

While DJ.Studio is clearly one of the most powerful stem splitter tools out there, you can find a bunch of other powerful stem separation tools. Here are some others that I've tried:

1. Serato DJ Pro Stems

   • Description: Serato DJ Pro integrates stem separation through its "Serato Stems" feature, allowing DJs to isolate and manipulate vocals, drums, bass, and melody directly within the software.

   • Review: Serato DJ Pro’s stem separation is impressively accurate and user-friendly, making it a powerful tool for live remixing and mashups. However, the processing can be resource-intensive, potentially affecting performance on lower-end hardware.

2. VirtualDJ Stems

   • Description: VirtualDJ includes a Stems feature that provides real-time separation of song components. DJs can control vocals, instruments, kicks, hi-hats, and more independently.

4. Traktor Pro Stems

   • Description: Traktor Pro, while primarily a powerful DJ software, offers stem file support that allows DJs to work with pre-separated stems. This is more about utilizing existing stem files rather than real-time separation.

   • Review: Traktor Pro’s approach to stem separation is solid for those who have access to pre-separated stem files, offering excellent control and flexibility. However, the lack of real-time stem separation is a downside compared to other software that offers this feature natively.

5. Rekordbox DJ Stems

   • Description: Rekordbox DJ, by Pioneer, introduced "Track Separation" technology that allows DJs to isolate parts of the track such as vocals, drums, and instruments in real-time.

   • Review: Rekordbox DJ’s stem separation feature is relatively new and offers promising results. The integration is smooth, and the quality of separation is quite high. However, as with other software, it can be demanding on the system, and occasional artifacts in complex tracks can occur.

6. Moises.ai

   • Description: Moises.ai is not strictly DJ software but is used by many DJs for its advanced stem separation capabilities. It allows users to upload tracks and separate them into stems, which can then be downloaded and used in any DJ software. It even offers a free stem separation tool demo.
